There’s been talk of a sequel to Gladiator for years, but at last it looks like the plans for Gladiator 2 are officially taking shape. According to ‘Deadline’, director Ridley Scott has begun moving ahead with a follow-up which will be written by Peter Craig [The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 and Part 2, Top Gun: Maverick] for Paramount. And it seems that Maximus will not be returning after all, despite Scott once saying|:
“I can bring him back. I know how to bring him back. I talked him into how I’m bringing him back. I use the body of a dying warrior as a portal that could bring somebody back”.
Instead, the movie will apparently center on Lucius, the son of Lucilla and the nephew of Commodus.
Despite being a lover of the Sword and Sandal genre I wasn’t the biggest fan of the original, which was basically an unofficial remake of the superior The Fall Of The Roman Empire, but it was a huge hit and even won Best Picture. Seeing as it’s been 18 years since it came out, I can’t see this sequel having anywhere near the same impact somehow.
