It was announced at Cannes the other day that the next installment in the Saw franchise will be a “re-imagining”, and will be directed by none other than Darren Lynn Bousman, who helmed the first three sequels. The latter probably doesn’t sound that strange, nor does the fact that the screenplay was written by Jigsaw writers Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg. However, the script is based on a story by Chris Rock, who will also executive produce!

Says Rock:

“I’ve been a fan of Saw since the first film in 2004. I am excited by the opportunity to take this to a really intense and twisted new place.”

Joe Drake, Chairman of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group:

“When Chris Rock came to us and described in chilling detail his fantastic vision that re-imagines and spins-off the world of the notorious Jigsaw Killer, we were all-in. Saw is one of the highest grossing horror franchises of all-time and it’s one of Lionsgate’s most successful film series. This upcoming film will still be as mind-bending and intense as all the previous Saw films. Chris conceived this idea and it will be completely reverential to the legacy of the material while reinvigorating the brand with his wit, creative vision and passion for this classic horror franchise.”

And series producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules:

“Chris wants to put his own spin on the Saw franchise in the way Eddie Murphy put a completely fresh perspective on buddy-cop films with 48 Hours. This new Saw is going to be an event film in the making for horror fans. It will have all of the twists and turns and hardcore layers that our fans expect directed by one of the masters of the craft, Darren Lynn Bousman. We can’t wait to get started”.

Well, they’re certainly trying to sell this news to us! I’m sure that fans of the series are debating it as I write. I’m no Saw fan myself, but did feel that Jigsaw was a particularly lame entry, so you never know, this could be the shot in the arm that the franchise needs!

The next Saw will be released on October 23, 2020.

I'm a huge film fan and will watch pretty much any type of film, from Martial Arts to Westerns, from Romances [though I don't really like Romcoms!]] to Historical Epics. Though I most certainly 'have a life', I tend to go to the cinema twice a week! However, ever since I was a kid, sneaking downstairs when my parents had gone to bed to watch old Universal and Hammer horror movies, I've always been especially fascinated by horror, and though I enjoy all types of horror films, those Golden Oldies with people like Boris Karloff and Christopher Lee probably remain my favourites. That's not to say I don't enjoy a bit of blood and gore every now and again though, and am also a huge fan of Italian horror, I just love the style.
