Where did I hear something vaguely like this before? Ah yes, it was in 2015 when Terminator: Genisys was intended to kick start a new trilogy, but performed so badly at the box office that this plan was ditched. Seeing as that film was a confused mess, I can’t say that I was disappointed by this.
The upcoming Terminator: Dark Fate is another story though. For me, there have only been two real Terminator films, and I’m sure you can guess what they are. But it’s possible now that there could soon be three. With James Cameron producing, Tim Miller‘s Terminator: Dark Fate is a direct sequel to Terminator 2: Judgement Day that ignores the other three movies. ‘Deadline’ spoke to Cameron about the plans for the franchise:
“We spent several weeks breaking story and figuring out what type of story we wanted to tell so we would have something to pitch Linda [Hamilton]. We rolled up our sleeves and started to break out the story and when we got a handle on something we looked at it as a three-film arc, so there is a greater story there to be told. If we get fortunate enough to make some money with Dark Fate we know exactly where we can go with the subsequent films.”
Will the film’s box office take warrant two follow-ups? We’ll find soon after it hits cinemas on November 1, 2019.
