I must have missed the news that they were definitely going ahead with the third version of Little Shop Of Horrors, though I knew it had been mooted for some time with Joseph Gordon-Levitt at one time being considered for the lead role of Seymour. Roger Corman’s great little 1960 cheapie inspired the stage musical which was then filmed in 1986. This new version is again an adaptation of the musical, which seems pointless. The ’86 film was perfectly fine and followed the stage show [which is one of my favourite musicals] fairly faithfully – yes, there were a few changes, but none of them drastic except for maybe the changed ending….and for those who don’t like that, there’s the director’s cut which retains the original finale as well as expanding it into some brief Godzilla -style mayhem.
But remaking it they are, and probably joining Taron Egerton and Scarlett Johansson is Chris Evans as Orin Scrivello the evil dentist, but can anybody see him being as good as Jack Nicholson or Steve Martin in the role?
