Coming not long after the death of Kirk Douglas, another acting legend passed away yesterday. Max von Sydow’s wife Catherine announced today that:
“It is with a broken heart and with infinite sadness that we have the extreme pain of announcing the departure of Max Von Sydow on 8 March 2020”.
Sydow made his name with his performances in eleven movies for Swedish director Ingmar Bergman which include classics of world cinema such as Wild Strawberries and The Seventh Seal, and after moving to Hollywood appeared in everything from Dune to Star Wars: The Force Awakens to Shutter Island to Game Of Thrones. He played a particularly good Jesus in The Greatest Story Ever Told but, despite having a great part in Dario Argento’s Sleepless, will always be remembered more than anything else for playing the role of Father Lankester Merrin, aided by some brilliant aging makeup, in William Friedkin’s The Exorcist, a film that’s still regarded by many, including myself, as one of the greatest horror movies ever made.
RIP Max.
