This news apparently broke towards the end of last week just a day after I posted an article about an un-made prequel to The Shining, and even said in it that a TV series would probably come along instead. Just in case it hasn’t reached you I’ll post it now anyway. HBO Max and J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot are teaming for a series called Overlook, which is described as “a horror-thriller series that explores the untold stories of the Overlook Hotel, the most famous haunted hotel in American fiction”. It will be executive produced by Abrams and Ben Stephenson.
Says Kevin Reilly, chief content officer of HBO Max:
“What an amazing start to our association with the wildly imaginative Bad Robot team under J.J. and Katie [McGrath]. What could be better than an original J.J. idea and then Warner Bros. letting them loose on iconic I.P. from Stephen King and the DC Universe and to provide more must-have programming on HBO Max.”
My enthusiasm is tempered by the involvement of Abrams which is no longer a sign of quality in my book. Hopefully we’ll get more than glorified fan service and lazy rehashing this time.
