Ever dreamed of driving one of your favourite iconic cars from the screen at full speed around a race track?
The model slot car racing company Scalextric has been creating some incredible replicas of late inspired by the motors seen in our favourite television programmes and movies, from James Bond to Mr Bean. One of the latest is the Scalextric Knight Rider K.I.T.T. Car.
Based on the modified version of the 1982 Pontiac Trans AM as seen in the original Knight Rider TV series, this 1:32 scale replica model of Knight Industries Two Thousand, more commonly known as K.I.T.T., is a beauty to behold. The sleek lines of the gloss black motor, complete with a light-up strobe grill, just like in the TV show, are incredible. There’s even a Michael Knight-like character sat in the beige-coloured driver’s seat, with his hands resting on the dashboard which is adorned with colourful stickers mimicking the displays and buttons. Completing the look is the blue, Californian, personalised licence plate at the rear emblazoned with the word KNIGHT, along with working headlights and rear lights. (All the light functions only work when used on track).
One of the great things about these cars is that you don’t actually need a Scalextric circuit to be able to enjoy them. You can simply collect them and display them on your shelf, with Scalextric providing their models in packaging that caters for this.
The C4226 Knight Rider K.I.T.T. car comes presented on a white plastic stand with a clear plastic lid that is hinged to the base, allowing you to slide it open to access the car. The printed card it sits on creates a nice backdrop with details on with the show’s name and Scalextric logo printed on it. The car itself is attached to the base with a screw which can easily be undone so you can remove the car from the display base to either admire it up close or to use. It’s easy to reattach it to the base again too. I found this packaging to be very practical, as it allows you to display the car when not in use whilst keeping it dust-free and protected. Not only that, it allows the car to be presented in a smart way as a collectable.
For those who’ll be using the car to race on a slot car track, the K.I.T.T. car is equipped with the magnatraction system to improve the grip on the track, and on the underside of the base of the packaging there’s two spare pickup braid plates in case you need to swap the existing one out. K.I.T.T. is also digital plug ready, which means it can be easily converted for use on digital circuits too by having the chip fitted via the floor pan of the car.
The Knight Rider car is compatible with the Scalextric Spark Plug dongle, perfect if you prefer to control your slot cars using your digital Android or iOS mobile or tablet device instead of using a traditional, handheld hard controller.
It’s clear to see an incredible amount of detail has gone into creating this slick-looking K.I.T.T.. Having collected cars from a young age, I can’t help but admire the lengths Scalextric has gone to create a high quality replica of the car, so much so it’s hard to believe it’s a slot car. For those who love to race their cars, having K.I.T.T. speeding away, complete with strobe light, adds some extra excitement to the track, especially if you’re a fan of the 80’s Knight Rider TV programme with David Hasselhoff.
The Scalextric Knight Rider K.I.T.T. car and other TV & Movie themed cars are available online from Scalextric.
