BEING HUMAN SEASON 4: Episode 1 Review: HUGHESY’S EYE ON THE TELLY REVIEW

BEING HUMAN SEASON 4: EPISODE 1

Being Human arrived back on BBC THREE tonight and while this usually fills me with excitement on what the next few weeks would bring, Season Four came with an air of dread that made my hands tremble with fear.  With Mitch killed off in the last few moments of the last series and with WereWolf Nina also announcing she has quit and won’t even have a farewell scene, fans like myself seriously believed that this could be the end of one of the best TV shows on the box.

With the departure of Aidan Turner and Sinead Keenan, the fans were then stunned with the news that Russell Tovey who plays the brilliant George was joining the two and saying goodbye to the TV show that made his name which meant that only poor old Annie (Lenora Crichlow) the tea loving ghost would be the only original character left standing.  Yes, even with me writing this I realise just how much pressure this season as on its head.  But despite a few fans suggesting that they might not even bother to tune into the show, I alongside many others sat down and hoped that somehow creator and executive Producer Toby Whitehouse would pull the impossible out of the bag and actually keep the level of quality up despite new faces and plot developments.

We start in 2037 and all of a sudden we are facing a Terminator style crisis for mankind where instead of metal robots we have Vampires taking over the world and only a resistance group can probably save us.  The show skips back to present time and we are stunned by the news that the Old Vampire group who turned up at the finale of the last episode have killed our lovely Nina.  Yes, I was bitterly disappointed by this, why Keenan could not be persuaded to do a last scene is something I can not work out.  To be told that a character who we have invested and grew to love for the past few years has been murdered in what was seemed like a little remark towards the camera.

Anyhow moving on we meet up with George who is now the proud dad of a little girl (conceived thanks to two Werewolf’s having sex)  but of course having lost the love of his life and the fact he killed his best friend Mitch, lets just say that things have not been kind to our loveable hero and things are going to get a heck of lot worse.

It seems that Being Human is all set to go all Buffy and Angel around us with the birth of this baby.  Prophecies are being written and the evil Vamps want that baby dead.  It seems the Herrick’s  plan for world domination is back to the fore because these evil blood suckers want the exact thing but if this baby lives, then that will be the end of the plan before it even bares fruit.  Now reasons for this is not yet clear because to be fair this was the opening episode and the pace of this hour show was relentless.  So much happened that it was impossible to pause for breath and I am sure this was intended because being the viewer, it was totally impossible to think of those who are no longer in the show!

For the new additions well no problem!  Werewolf Tom returned and no doubt to the joys of all the female viewers.  Michael Socha is great in the role and its going to be interesting to see how he fares now that Big Daddy Robson Green is not around.  All eyes were on of course the man brought in to replace Mitch and that is of course Hal ( Damien Molony). Now he may not have had much screen time here (and he oddly shares a house with a Werewolf and ghost), but  ticked all the right boxes.  Brooding, charming and very Angellike, the next episode is going to be very interesting to see what he brings to the table.

But before Tom and Hal could settle in, the dark bullet shaped Werewolf gloom that lingered over much of Season 3 was still in play and because we knew that Tovey was quitting then we all sat there waiting to see how he would actually go.  When it arrived it was bloody, bonkers and very sad and I am really sorry to see him go.  Bye Bye George….thanks for the memories.

As for the show itself, was it the nightmare that many predicted?  Well no!  It was laced with a dark vibe but a sense of freshness that a show on a season four probably needs…..and with that ending which suggests that someone from the future is coming back to the past to kill themselves………how can you not be hooked already!

Since my mother sat me down at the age of five years of age and watched a little called Halloween, I have been hooked on horror. There is no other genre that gets me excited and takes me to the edge of entertainment. I watch everything from old, new, to cheap and blockbusters, but I promise all my readers that I will always give an honest opinion, and I hope whoever reads this review section, will find a film that they too can love as much as I do! Have fun reading, and please DO HAVE NIGHTMARES!!!!!!
