Edgar Wright’s zombie triumph, Shaun of the Dead (2004) is probably the more fitting of his movies to appear on the HCF website, yet the goriest death takes place in his follow up comedy, Hot Fuzz. The movie concerns the arrival of a super cop called Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg) to the quiet town of Sandford. Angel realises the locals are not as friendly as they seem when investigating a series of grisly ‘accidents’.
Irritating hack, Tim Messenger (Adam Buxton) is also on the trail. Unfortunately for Tim, the killer is well aware of his involvement and puts an end to his career once in for all. Just before he can spill the beans to Angel, a large slab of concrete is dropped from the roof of the church onto Tim’s head. The resulting effect is funny, shocking and sick inducing all at the same time.
For anyone who has failed to see this comedy classic, Hot Fuzz is a clever mix of The Wickerman, Heartbeat and Bad Boys. It blends a Sunday night drama setting with Hollywood actioner set pieces. Look out for great cameos from Edward Woodward (The Wickerman), Timothy Dalton (The Living Daylights), Billie Whitelaw (The Omen), Paul Freeman (Raiders of the Lost Ark) and Kenneth Cranham (Valkyrie) to name but a few.
I cringe everytime I watch that part. Ouch!
Its gonna leave a mark
He’s gonna have red on him.
