What Is It All About

A group of seniors anxiously prepare for Homecoming night in the sleepy town of Winston. Three years after a tragic accident left a student dead at the annual dance, they find themselves haunted by a deadly visitor from their past. Unable to bury old demons, it looks like it’s finally payback time, and someone’s out for blood. Before the night is over, the halls will run red as they are stalked, staked and butchered by a relentless, savage killer bent on revenge. They must stop whoever is hunting them, or this year’s dance is going to be a killer.

 The Hughes Verdict

HorrorCultFilms is four years old this year and its hard to believe that with all the reviews I have wrote for our website, there is one that still leaves a nasty taste in my mouth when reading back.  All of us at HCF headquarters love a bit of Slash but I am probably more fond of them,  only because nothing gets me turned on the most than seeing a masked man going around hacking young beautiful virgins to death.  I will defend the sub genre to the hilt, its the reason why I love horror to this day, if it weren’t for Michael Myers chasing around Laurie Strode, then I probably would not be a part of the team here, so I do owe Slasher a huge amount of gratitude in my life.

The review in question which leaves me frustrated is of course the day I posted SCRE4M for and was mocked by emails from many who could not understand how I could give what they described an “average” film a mighty four stars, a rating to this day I do apologies for.  Having watched the fourth film only a few weeks ago, I realized that my love for all things Ghostface probably clouded my judgement when I left the cinema and in hindsight a three star rating would have been more significant as it still is a quality addition to a much loved franchise and a whole lot better than the dire third film that I still can’t find much love for after all these years.

The reason I bring this up is because the negative vibe towards Scre4m really frustrates me considering I have just watched Bloody Homecoming, a lazy attempt which for  its entire 90 minute running time displays all the reasons into why the slash genre is so mocked and hatred by the new wave of horror fans.

Lets tick the checklist here.

* Bunch of Horny Teens    CHECK

* A prom night kind of situation   CHECK

* A beginning which sees an evil person do something bad and somehow gets “killed” but do they?  CHECK

* A masked nut job      CHECK

* Notes left in lockers to suggest something bad is going to happen   CHECK

* A Creepy Janitor     CHECK

* Teens get killed off one by one until the final reveal   CHECK

* Instead of killing off the last person standing we get a ten minute speech into why they turned murderous  CHECK

You know I could go on and on but I think you get my point!

Bloody Homecoming is an awful waste of time for anyone who sits down to watch it and I include those who like me love the genre.  Its like this was made way back in the late 80’s and only now being released!  If that was the case then maybe my heart would have melted a bit but the fact this is a whole new addition to the many before it, you can not help but be angered at the lack of any originality on display.

Even just writing the plot for you makes me sigh!  A group of freshmen ….YAWN!….. try to attend an homecoming dance….YAWN!….. Things get heated….YAWN!… and when one of them tries to rape another, it results in a killing and everyone else moving on with their lives…. YAWN!   Now three years later,  the gang who are now seniors themselves and its guess what???  An all new Homecoming dance…..the first one since what happened the last time…..DOUBLE YAWN!!!  Did someone just yell PROM NIGHT????  Did you?   Well its not….its Bloody Homecoming.…so get it right!!!  Tut, call yourself a film fan!…..

Those involved from previous events start getting hand written brown notes with the words “I Know What You Did Last Summer“……sorry not that, wrong film…..but with the words “Happy Homecoming!” and then of course the killings start……Yippee!!!!  Oh how original all this is……..

I do not think I have been this frustrated with a horror slash since I sat down and watched the equally awful The Clown At Midnight.   Bloody Homecoming is as bad as you can get.  Terrible acting, awful dialogue and a total lack of interesting kills, there is nothing of note to give praise to what I  have just seen, even the odd kind of music score only reminded of Halloween and then I realized I should be watching that film instead of this pile of crap!

It would have helped if the film had a memorable killer but it doesn’t or even  have any kind of good kills which brings me back to my argument of Scre4m.  Watching this film reminds me just how harsh everyone treated that entry!   At least there we had quality moments that honored the entire slash genre…..here Bloody Homecoming does more damage because by trying to homage the many films before it , we only reminded of how bad this genre can be…..

I would love to say that only die hard slasher fans would truly find anything great about this film but surely we deserve better than this tired old horror.  I defend when I say that the genre is still a mighty force within horror, it just needs someone out there to grab it by its mask and give us something to really shout about, sadly Bloody Homecoming is not that film………..

Since my mother sat me down at the age of five years of age and watched a little called Halloween, I have been hooked on horror. There is no other genre that gets me excited and takes me to the edge of entertainment. I watch everything from old, new, to cheap and blockbusters, but I promise all my readers that I will always give an honest opinion, and I hope whoever reads this review section, will find a film that they too can love as much as I do! Have fun reading, and please DO HAVE NIGHTMARES!!!!!!
