FrightFest (2021): Films ranked

Well, it’s time to return to normal life – you can have too much of a good thing, and any more of this I’d be horrored out. But for folks wanting a very quick summary, which doesn’t involve reading five days of features plus the reviews beforehand, here it goes. As per usual, festival goggles apply. Also, keep in mind that I only attended the digital version so didn’t see a lot of the big hitters from the week before: apparently, The Sadness is something else. These lists used to be called best to worst, but a couple of years ago I changed it to ranked as the standard was that high. That’s still the case this time around – the first 5 are all 5-star films, and then the next 5 are all 4-star or 4.5. And then it’s all the way down to number 20 before you find a film I didn’t like. As such, though something like As In Heaven, So On Earth is low, it’s still a recommendation of sorts.

1. Beyond The Infinite Two Minutes
2. Hotel Poseidon
3. Nocturna: Side A – The Great Old Man’s Night
4. Woodlands Dark And Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror
5. Dawn Breaks Behind the Eyes
6. The Maid
7. Sound Of Violence
8. Broadcast Signal Intrusion
9. Coming Home In The Dark
10. The Found Footage Phenomenon
11. The Brilliant Terror
12. Sweetie, You Won’t Believe It
13. Ultrasound
14. Gaia
15. Killer Concept
16. The Last Rite
17. Pretty Boy
18. As In Heaven, So On Earth
19. The Show
20. Bad Candy
21. Claw

My usual thanks to The Four Horsemen for putting it on: Alan, Paul, Greg and Ian – you’ve delivered the goods once again. I wish a well-earned break until the October version. Thanks for following along, if you have done, and see you next time!
