 THE HUGHES VERDICT!

Hmmm!!!!!……

Ok then, lets review the crap fest that is Dragon Wasps!. Now straight from the off I have gone and told you that this film is indeed “crap” but I suppose many of you will know that just by reading the title. Mark Atkins who give the world the equally rubbish Sand Sharks has once again put pen to paper and given the film world a story about Wasps that are half Dragons. I mean I can’t write that without even shaking my head in disbelief and thinking “What a load of Rubbish!”….and its something that I done a lot when I was watching this film.

The story of sorts is that entomologist Gina Humphries (Dominika Juliett) is searching for her father who has decided to go missing in the Belize rainforest. Taking her assistant Rhonda (Nikolette Noel) with her, they trek into the jungle being helped by army officer John Hammond ( Corin Nemec- who like in Sand Sharks is the best thing in here) to find out what happened to her dad and equally hoping to find him alive.

So far so good. That is of course until they run into the film’s badass and I am not talking about the flying insects. The film gives us the Voodoo gangster Jaguar (Gildon Rowland), who acts like he has just walked off the set of Marked For Death and for the first time in a long long while, I was hoping Steven Seagel would turn up and beat the shit out of this guy.

While Jaguar acts like he is from the 80’s and speaks some really bad lines, Gina, Rhona and Hammond then stumble upon the jungle’s big dark secret. Oh yes……DRAGON WASPS……… and I say that again DRAGON WASPS……seriously what ever Atkins is smoking I want some….badly…. I mean he sat there and thought “right I have done sharks in sand….now what else can I do? Oh I know……A wasp that can breathe fire……yes, that’s it…….A DRAGON WASP…………. yeah baby!”…..

Now for a film that is selling the audience that dumb idea, you would expect the effects to be out of this world, but then we are talking here about a film that really does not care about that angle. The DRAGON WASPS………….are awful………..not even in a cheesy way! The CGI is totally crap with each DRAGON WASP….changing size and often coming across like a huge blurry mess. Also the film fails to sell on the promise that is in fact a B-Movie monster movie because there are a few fleeting battles between the humans and these crazy breeding off springs. I can forgive the awful acting on show and the terrible CGI, if the film had non stop monster battles, but too much time is spent on talking and “missing father shit”, than actual fight scenes…… I came into this movie begging for DRAGON WASPS….COME ON!”….. but there was just not enough to get me excited.

The trouble with films like these is that everyone around making the film knows that its daft and so they try to make the best out of the situation. Sometimes the fun they are having doing the shoot, transpires onto the screen and that is why this genre has had mass appeal over the years with die hard fans just loving the stupidity that is on offer. Sometimes you do get some that explode onto the big screen, films like Tremors and Eight Legged Freaks spring to mind, bigger budget but still basically offering the same premise as Dragon Wasps. The titles that work and are complete delight to watch are the ones that basically take the piss out of themselves. Sadly Dragon Wasps just takes itself a bit to damn straight to make me enjoy the ride.

The imagery on show is the best thing on offer here and I do like Corin Nemec who could become the Bruce Campbell of the giant monster genre, but unlike such “classics” like Mega Shark Vs Giant Octopus, Dragon Wasps did not contain enough humour or gore to thrill my horror heart and while this could be called perfect “Beer Movie!” and fans of these will probably dig it a lot more than I did, a film about Wasps and Dragons blended together should be daft and stupid and a really good watch, sadly for me, it had me reaching for the insect killer spray because half way through I just wanted the entire film to Buzz off……………….

If you are a huge fan of this genre then add two stars….

Dragon Wasps is out now to rent and buy…….

Since my mother sat me down at the age of five years of age and watched a little called Halloween, I have been hooked on horror. There is no other genre that gets me excited and takes me to the edge of entertainment. I watch everything from old, new, to cheap and blockbusters, but I promise all my readers that I will always give an honest opinion, and I hope whoever reads this review section, will find a film that they too can love as much as I do! Have fun reading, and please DO HAVE NIGHTMARES!!!!!!
