HCF CLASSIC MOMENT No.1: The Final Scene in PSYCHO

In a Brand new feature on HorrorCultFilms, we look at the scenes that blow us away, moments that will live forever in our minds and in yours.  Hughesy starts with the classic that is Psycho….and its not that shower scene……

NORMAN BATES SPEAKING IN HIS MOTHER’S VOICE…..

“It’s sad…….when a mother has to speak the words that condemn her own son.  But I couldn’t allow them to believe that I would commit murder!  They’ll put him away now, as I should have, years ago.  He was always bad, and in the end he intended to tell them I killed those girls, and that man.  As if I could do anything except just sit and stare, like one of his stuffed birds.  They know I can’t even move a finger, and I won’t.  I’ll just sit here and be quiet, just in case they do…suspect me.  They’re probably watching me…..Well, let them.  Let them see what kind of a person I am.”

Norman looks down at a fly crawling on his hand

“I’m not even going to swat that fly….I hope they are watching.  They’ll see, they’ll see and they’ll know, and they’ll say….

“Why, she wouldn’t even harm a fly……”

PSYCHO 1960

Hughesy:

While I am the odd fan who prefers the sequel to the original….(yes please don’t judge), no horror fan can argue the power that came from Psycho.  Such a stunning influential film from a wonderful talent in the shape of good old Alfred Hitchcock, its a movie that will last the tests of time and despite a illogical remake in the 90’s….will always find new horror fans.

While the shower scene is quite rightly considered a classic moment, I do have a fondness for that final scene……it shows just how much of a “psycho” Norman was.   Anthony Perkins plays it perfectly….just with facial expressions and a hint of menace and terror……

Reading that back now and the moment he or his “Mother” says “He was always bad”…..adds extra weight these days thanks to the new TV prequel Bates Motel….

Tremendous stuff……………

Since my mother sat me down at the age of five years of age and watched a little called Halloween, I have been hooked on horror. There is no other genre that gets me excited and takes me to the edge of entertainment. I watch everything from old, new, to cheap and blockbusters, but I promise all my readers that I will always give an honest opinion, and I hope whoever reads this review section, will find a film that they too can love as much as I do! Have fun reading, and please DO HAVE NIGHTMARES!!!!!!
