He’s back! The horror genre is by far my favorite, and I was really excited when I saw the headline in the gaming news section saying that Microgaming signs licensing contract for horror classic Halloween®”. Microgaming is known for its excellent gaming software and can be seen across a number of online casino platforms, such as Royal Vegas Casino.
“Halloween” – A Cult Classic
Halloween is a horror cult classic that made its debut in 1978 and has influenced a wide array of horror films. In fact, it was the reason why slasher films became popular during the 1980’s. Who can forget films like A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th and Scream? All of these were influenced by Halloween.
Directed by John Carpenter, who is heralded as the Master of Horror, Halloween has won and been nominated for some of the most prestigious awards given by the American Film Institute. Adding to that is actress Jamie Lee Curtis, who set the standard for future “last girl alive” scenarios. And who can forget the haunting and spine tingling theme music, and that all too familiar mask worn by the killer? Halloween went on to produce a series of Halloween follow ups, as well as a set of graphic novels.
Remakes and Sequels
The Halloween franchise spawned 7 sequels and it seemed no one could kill Michael Myers. Famous musician, Rob Zombie did a remake of the movie in 2007. In 2009 there was a sequel to that remake, but this wasn’t related to the sequel done for the original movie. John Carpenter took pen to paper and wrote the original movie’s sequel, which picked up exactly were the first movie left off. The sequel was meant to finish the story behind Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and Michael Myers (Nick Castle). Halloween II became a success in the box office.
The rest of the Halloween films that came after were not written by John Carpenter, but he did produce the third movie, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, in 1982. This one was missing its main character, Michael Myers however, and the film didn’t do too well. So Michael Myers was brought back into the picture for the fourth movie, Halloween IV: The Return of Michael Myers, in 1988. This movie did so well that it got its own sequel, Halloween V: The Revenge of Michael Myers, in 1989. In 1995, we were blessed with the sixth movie, Halloween VI: The Curse of Michael Myers.
Fun Fact: over the 35-year run of Halloween movies, Michael Myers has been played by 7 different actors.
Then came Halloween H20: 20 Years Later, in 1998. We saw Jamie Lee Curtis brought back to play Laurie Strode, who started a new life under an assumed name. This doesn’t stop good old Mike Myers though, and soon the terror ensues as they reach Halloween night. While this movie got a good reception, it still couldn’t beat the original Halloween.
The final sequel to the original movie came in 2002, Halloween: Resurrection, which sees a group of teenagers who have won a contest. The prize? They get to spend the night in the childhood abode of Michael Myers, a night that would be broadcasted live. Needless to say, fun and games soon turns to fright and flight.
Halloween Hits the Gaming World
It was in 1983 that the movie was adapted into a video game by Wizard Video, created for the Atari 2600. While the game strayed from the movie, it was packed with gore and blood, to the point that many parents didn’t want their kids to play it. But hardcore horror and gore gamers always found a way.
The Halloween slots online casino game, which is still in development, will hopefully hit the online casinos in time for the celebrated day of ghosts and ghouls. Royal Vegas Casino has a number of horror themed games and I look forward to seeing Halloween join them.
