Grimmfest are delighted to host a special 20th Anniversary screening of The Blair Witch Project (1999) on 35mm at The Plaza in Stockport on 24th July 2019..
Three film students vanish after travelling into a Maryland forest to film a documentary on the local Blair Witch legend, leaving only their footage behind.
Twenty years ago, when the internet was in its infancy, the world was held captive by this ‘real-life’ documentary style film which projected the ‘found-footage’ sub-genre into the horror-sphere. Whilst the film was made for only $60,000, it made $1.5m in its US opening weekend and has gone on to gross nearly $250m world-wide.
For this event, Grimmfest hope to create an immersive experience for fans. Ticket holders will be invited to participate in recreating the spectacle of the original release and will experience the unnerving terror of this much loved hand-held classic.
Local artist and talented fine arts graduate of the University of Leeds, Matter Horror will be selling their horror-themed bookmarks, badges and stickers. Check them out and pick some goodies up before the screening.
Dr Sorcha Ní Fhlainn from Gothic Manchester and Senior Lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University will be joining us for a post-screening discussion of the film. Sorcha’s research areas include gothic and horror cinema; specialising in vampire studies and teratology (monster studies). She has published many papers and books on a variety of subjects including Clive Barker, serial killers in film, The Lost Boys and Christopher Nolan and most recently published the book ‘Postmodern Vampires: Film, Fiction, and Popular Culture’.
Doors open at 7pm with the film starting at 8pm. The Q&A with Dr Sorcha Ní Fhlainn will follow at 9.30pm and the event will wrap at 10pm. The film will start promptly at the advertised time.
Tickets are priced at £6 plus booking fee and can be bought online.
Tickets will also be available on the door 60 minutes before the event starts.
No under 15s will be admitted
