BEING HUMAN SEASON 4: EPISODE 3 Its kind of ironic that I was ending my review last week by saying that the new trio of Being Human were sitting down, watching the TV and probably watching The Real Hustle– the show that George, Mitch and Annie used to sit together and watch. This episode we actually had that scene, Annie looked on while Tom and Hal were wondering what kind of show this was and then to show the new way of attitude, they turned over and instead watched what I believed was the Antiques Road show, with a beaming Annie in the middle beginning to realise that maybe her life was returning to normal.
This slight gag was a gentle reminder that we have not forgotten those who are gone but writing this third review of the show, I am beginning to feel like I am repeating myself over and over. Yes Mitch, Nina and George are long gone and yes its hard for the viewer to watch this show without thinking of them but please…..and I mean this is the highest compliment I can give to the show, lets move on now. I actually really like the new set up and with Hal (Damien Molony) being a wonderful new addition too the show and I mean wonderful, I want to see more of this new path and not have constant reminders of the our long dead friends.
You can say I am being quite harsh, I mean its understandable that Annie (Lenora Crichlow) will be in some sort of grief and have a loss stage, but Being Human does not have a season run like True Blood to build up the tension and suspense. While Sookie and co have 22 episodes to keep the viewers guessing and offering as much twist plots than your brain can handle, Being Human only has eight and from next week onwards we have already reached the half way stage. What we the viewer want now is to move on to this year’s bad, see where the plot is heading, feel the dread and get some suspense going. Now I had these feelings after I watched “preview of next week” episode and before I explain why……lets confuse you a bit more!
You see here I am complaining when in fact I at first fully understood why the “‘The Graveyard Shift’ was such a slow fest. This was about getting a kind of relationship going between Hal and Tom (Michael Socha) and to do that, our new Vamp had to get a job and he done so by working in the greasy cafe with the young Werewolf! This set-up which dominated the whole show was wonderful, a kind of sitcom in which the two new leads were simply enjoying themselves from the off. The uncomfortable reaction from Hal in certain situations is what making this season of Being Human a must watch. I loved the bit where the annoying wannabe writer Michaela (Laura Patch) is chucking loose coins at him because she can not afford the meal she just ordered. His speech and confused stance at the way he was being treated and the sudden realisation in what heck he was even doing working in a cafe was Being Human at is very best and I doubt I see a much better hilarious scene in the show this year.
It was much better than the scenes in which Hal and Tom tried to chat up Michaela but then maybe it was just me because I really did not like that character. Too outlandish for my taste and I hope that she will not become a recurring character, but I suspect that she will do after what happens to her at the end of the show!

While Hal and Tom try a bit of male bonding, Annie and the viewers get to know more about this prophecy thanks to the return of Regus (Mark Williams) who fills in her in more about why Baby Eve is so important to Mankind and so dangerous to Vampires. Its was great to see Williams in a much bigger role and his “Sex Request” towards Annie and the eventual outcome was also a massive highlight that had me giggling like a fool.
The show has done really well in not losing the quality due to the loss of the main characters and even when Fergus (Anthony Flanagan) turned up for battle I loved the way the show once again changed expectations because with fergus all dressed in a policeman outfit and with past connections to Hal, I bet, I and many other fans thought that this was going to be like Mitch Vs Herrick all over again but thankfully Hal’s actions at the climax put paid to that worry.
So why did am I praising the show now when I started this review with a negative stance?
Well like I have said this new look really works but you just feel that the writers are wary to overhaul the complete show in case they do piss off the hardcore fans. What do I mean by this? Well that Real Hustle gag was great and a nice reminder but judging by next weeks episode we are reliving The Box Tunnel Massacre and that actually spoilt the entire watch last night. It seems that while many viewers are moving on quite nicely, its the writers that seem to be failing us, if we really need to go back to that Massacre all over again then its only going to make us think of Mitch and co and that is not what I want!
I want more of Hal and this War Child Storyline, not blast from the past storylines that the new dynamic does not want or need. Like I said many times in last weeks review and I will say it one more time…..
Its time to move on, because Being Human 2012, is turning out much better than I and every fan out there expected!
