Book of Blood (2008)
Directed by: John Harrison
Written by: Clive Barker, Darin Silverman, John Harrison
Starring: Clive Russell, Jonas Armstrong, Sophie Ward
Book of Blood seems to suffer from the Bilbo Baggin’s comment, “Too little butter being spread over too much bread”. The movie is effectively shot with good production values, competant acting and looks and sounds so similar to Hellraiser, but it lacks content. On a positive note it has all the Barker trademarks, ie, ripping flesh, pervy romps, female (and male) nudity and a satisfying climax (ahem!).
The movie begins with a young, male student (Simon) being abducted by a (not so) friendly sociopath who likes his job a little too much. While undressing the student to begin a carvefest he is alarmed by the amount of scars on the young man’s body. Simon then tells the psycho his tale and so far so good.
Where the movie fails is the content. There is not enough skin to flesh this yarn out. etc, etc. However the atmosphere remains impressive and there are there are enough shocks thrown in to keep the horror fans satisfied. Worth a watch especially for the afore mentioned ending.
