Explaining Split’s shocking Twist! Hughesy discusses how M. Knight Shyamalan topped The Sixth Sense’s ending!

Let’s be honest!  You didn’t see that coming did you?

Now if you haven’t see the film SPLIT, then please avoid what comes next!  This article contains massive spoilers for the film that is winning massive criticial acclaim and the only reason I am writing this feature is because at the cinema, a few people around me (of the younger generation) did not “get” that final scene, so this article is for those people confused at what unfolded.  So please, if you haven’t seen the film, avoid this at all costs, simply because SPLIT contains a a massive twist that left many in the cinema shocked!

You have been warned:

SPOILER ALERT!

SPOILER ALERT!

SPOILER ALERT!

Ready?

Wow!

That’s all that went through my head when the credits started to roll on Split.  I mean did M. Night Shyamalan just top his ultimate twist ending of The Sixth Sense?  Probably!  Because Split’s earth shattering reveal simply came out of nowhere and I can only applaud the writer/director for keeping this one under wraps.

For those of the younger generation who simply did not understand what was going on – and who can blame you, its a moment the older generation have been waiting 15 years for- lets recap the final moments!

Its the finale and Casey has survived her orderal.   We have seen Kevin’s 24th personality which is called The Beast, a side of him that has what it seems superhero strength and likes the taste of human flesh.   The film ends with Kevin’s other personalities talking to themselves while realising that they have managed to escape from the police and virtually live to fight another day!

Cut to the cue card and SPLIT appears on screen.  Game over!  Film ended!  Brilliant!

But like a Marvel film (and that is a very appropriate pun) the film has a final extra shot.

So we are in a cafe, and a news report is playing on the TV.  The reporter mentions the missing girls and states that the police are now calling the suspected killer “The Horde” because of his multiple personalities.  Cool name for a supervillian……and yet, I still sat there oblivious to what was happening.  A women in the diner says that the name reminds her of a criminal from over 15 years ago who was given a name….”What was his name?” she asks out loud!

“Mr Glass!” comes the reply!

Sitting next to her is the one and only David Dunn.   Who you may ask if you not sure and why is Bruce Willis in this scene?

Because ladies and Gentleman if you are not sure, what we have just watched is virtually a sequel to…..

UNBREAKABLE and an origin story for an Unbreakable 3!

Yes M. Night Shyamalan has pulled off a right shocker.  I don’t think I’ve seen a film for such a long time in which the finale left me in total disbelief.  For me personally, Split tops The Sixth Sense for a “What the…..” moment.  Here I was expecting a thriller and hoping for a return to form by Shyamalan and while the film was good in its own right, the last moments has only enhanced the film in my eyes.  Even now I want to re-watch Split and now as I can surf the internet to see if there was clues throughout the film, to my amazement, there was and I never saw them.

They were minor hints and some fans did spot them.  For a start, there was a hint of the Unbreakable theme music in a key scene (nope, never saw it) and also Kevin’s powers came to him in a train, much like David’s but the main clue was right in front of us all.

Take a look at the film’s poster above and you can the lines of broken glass, much like the Unbreakable poster.  And if you put the two posters together:

Amazing!

M. Night Shyamalan has admitted since the release of the film that Kevin was a character that was originally supposed to the in Unbreakable!

“Instead of bumping into the Orange Suit Man, David [Willis’s character] bumps into one of Kevin’s personalities and goes to save the girls,” he said. “Some of the Kevin scenes were already completely written, all the way back then. One of the ‘Patricia’ scenes, the Hedwig introduction scene, those were written over 15 years ago. I have them written by hand in my notebooks.”

He’s admitted now that there are plans for a third film which will see David and Kevin square off!

“I don’t know what’s going to happen when I go off in my room, a week after this film opens, to write the script,” Shyamalan said. “But I’m going to start writing. [I have] a really robust outline, which is pretty intricate. But now the standards for my outlines are higher. I need to know I’ve won already. I’m almost there but I’m not quite there.”

Up until three hours ago I had no idea that an Unbreakable 3 was possible but thanks to Split’s wonderful concept and shocker of a twist….its seems after years of being off his game, Shyamalan is right back in the mix and I for one can’t wait for this ultimate showdown.
