What is it all about?
The normal routine for the horror genre at the moment is for the new generation to remake horror classics. Now we get to the 1993 old classic Leprechaun which took the world by storm and a film that one of its stars, a certain Jennifer Aniston cherishes with all her heart. Can this all new faithful adaptation of the much loved horror film, makes its original proud? Can it do a Dawn Of The Dead and be totally fantastic? Am I taking the piss writing this? Are the makers with this film taking the piss? Is the horror world?????
The Hughes Verdict!
Ummmm!!!!!!!!!!!!! OK then!
It be too easy for me to write this seven word statement but here goes……..“The Worst Horror Film Of The Year!”, but seriously…..Leprechaun Origins is bad…..not bad…….really awful. I know that probably many would not have expected any different but for a film to be the worst of the franchise, considering some of the original films quality, is just a plain and utter joke.
The original Leprechaun may be a film that is not very good, but at least it had a bit of “Charm” (excuse the pun), with Warwick Davis in a role that he relished. Yes, Jennifer Aniston may not agree, the actress even refuses to acknowledge the film in her CV , but for a guilty pleasure, the box set which does stand in my DVD Collection, is something that passes the time away on a cold winter night.
I hate all this remake lark anyway, but I suppose while its pointless to remake such perfection like Halloween (yes Mr Zombie), I get the idea with a film like Leprechaun. But please! How can you make a film like this so void of all ideas. Its not even a Leprechaun film? Why? Because there IS NO LEPRECHAUN!!!! What we have is this sort of mutant baby offspring of those creatures from The Descent, running around so fast that we actually never get to see him. Now I know that this was a ploy made successful by Steven Spielberg in JAWS, but that all time classic had a quality script and we knew that when we did not see Bruce in the water, we knew that it was a shark. I can’t even describe what this thing was, only that it had a sort of a cheap version of the Predator style vision.
Plot wise its the same old crap. American backpackers are on a holiday in Ireland when they befriend a couple of Irish guys who offers them a place in a cabin in the middle of nowhere. Obviously these stupid crazy imbeciles have never watched a horror film, I mean if you were backpacking and someone says to you….”Hi…fancy a night in a cabin in the middle of nowhere….or how do you fancy this Hostel I run?”…..you be like “Feck Off”….but nooooooooooooo!!!!!!! they up and go willingly, instantly losing any goodwill with the viewer. I mean if they that stupid, they deserve everything that is coming to them!…….
The thin storyline is that this Irish town has nicked some gold from a Leprechaun and to appease this vicious bastard they offer sacrifices to it……..and that is really all you need to know because that is what we are only given.
Night falls and this creature turns up and soon killings start, all lacking in any inventive style or wit. At least with the old Leprechaun films everyone involved including Davis knew what they were making was awful and that is what contributed to the fun and the reason it has a loyal fan base. Thanks to The Dark Knight and everything else in recent times, everything has to be “sooooo serious” and by going down this route……Origins is just a bland boring film.
After the disaster of the Friday 13th redo, you would expect writers to have realised that all we want from our old horror icons is a bit of fun. One of the reasons why HATCHET was universally loved was because it was old school and it flowed with slash quality. This Leprechaun just comes across screaming in your face “We want to be taken seriously”…..but how can you when you have this awful crap looking thing running amok.
Even WWE fans will be pissed off as their hero Dylan “Hornswoggle” Postl who takes over from Davis in the lead role gets nothing of note. Not one line, not one glimpse of him….nothing! Such a big news event for some fans, but anyone could be playing the Leprechaun or whatever that bastard thing is.
Leprechaun Origins is so bad that it will make you want to watch the original Leprechaun film just to banish the memories and that is saying something. Damn even the one where Davis is in space is more watchable. Hopefully one day the delightful Miss Aniston will somehow stumble upon this travesty and take a gander and then realise that the film she starred in weren’t that bad after all, because believe me…….Origins we be one film everyone will want to take off their CV…..
