HCF CLASSIC MOMENT NO.3: Why Kate hates Christmas……(Gremlins)

In a Brand new feature on HorrorCultFilms, we look at the scenes that blow us away, moments that will live forever in our minds and in yours….For number 3 on the list, Hughesy brings you what is probably the best moment in the entire Gremlins franchise………

Hughesy:  Gremlins is a classic film that even after all these years, still entices a new generation, so much so, that plans are ready being talked and made for an all new addition to the much loved series.  There are many scenes that are forever remembered by fans, from the first appearance of Gizmo, that microwave scene to of course the “Flasher!”….and countless others.  But its the moment that strangely does not concern a Gremlin that stands out as the most darkest moment of the film.  A story that is horrific and so out of place for a movie that many consider a “children’s film”……its the scene where Kate (Phoebe Cates) explains why she hates the festival season so much…..

KATE: Now I have another reason to hate Christmas.

BILLY:
What are you talking about?

KATE:
The worst thing that ever happened to me was on Christmas, it was so horrible. It was Christmas Eve. I was nine years old. Me and mom were decorating the tree, waiting for dad to come home from work. Couple of hours went by, dad wasn’t home, so mom called the office. No answer. Christmas Day came and went, and still nothing. The police began a search. Four or five days went by. Neither one of us could eat or sleep. Everything was falling apart. It was snowing outside. The house was freezing, so I went to try to light up the fire. And that’s when I noticed the smell. Firemen came, broke through the chimney top. Then me and mom were expecting them to pull out a dead cat or a bird, and instead they pulled out my father. He was dressed in a Santa Claus suit. He’d been climbing down the chimney on Christmas Eve. His arm was loaded with presents. He was gonna surprise us. He slipped and broke his neck, died instantly. And that’s how I found out there was no Santa Claus..

Since my mother sat me down at the age of five years of age and watched a little called Halloween, I have been hooked on horror. There is no other genre that gets me excited and takes me to the edge of entertainment. I watch everything from old, new, to cheap and blockbusters, but I promise all my readers that I will always give an honest opinion, and I hope whoever reads this review section, will find a film that they too can love as much as I do! Have fun reading, and please DO HAVE NIGHTMARES!!!!!!
